Literacy Program

The mission of the Adult Literacy Program is to provide free English as a Second Language (ESL) instruction to community adults and to improve the literacy of educationally disadvantaged adults to levels of proficiency necessary to function on the job, in the family and in society. The Adult Literacy Program offers free ESL classes in the daytime, afternoon and evening at four sites in the community. The program also offers Language Lab Computer classes and day and evening Citizenship classes. Classes are held in the Kennett Square and West Grove areas.

Our one-to-one tutoring program is a core part of the Adult Literacy Program. We match each student with a volunteer tutor willing to meet at least two hours each week to help students improve their reading, writing, speaking and listening skills. We hold tutor training bi-annually – once in the Fall and again in the Spring. During the course of the year, anyone interested in volunteering can come into the office, and the training can be done on an individual basis. Our need for tutors is immediate and ongoing since the waiting list continues to grow on a daily basis.

Anyone interested in volunteering or receiving information about the Adult Literacy Program can contact the office at 610-444-9118.
