Summer Reading Program
Bayard Taylor Library offers a number of high-quality, fun programs designed to keep children of all ages excited about reading and visiting the library during the summer. We partner with a number of local organizations and participate in the “Collaborative Summer Library Program,” offered through the Chester County Library System. The collaborative comes up with a fun theme, and much of the programming and activities follow the theme.
The past four years, Bayard Taylor has kicked off its SUMMER READING program with a party at Anson B. Nixon Park. The events have included entertainment (Jungle John, Makin’ Music), food, face-painting, balloon sculptures, cotton candy and pony rides. Also at the kickoff party, children can register for the various programs associated with SUMMER READING .
One component of the SUMMER READING program is keeping a book log. Children register and receive the book log and a T-shirt. The book log includes a calendar, where children check off every day they read 20 minutes or more. Children turn in the book log in mid-August and receive book dollars for every day checked. They can use the book dollars to buy fun prizes at the SUMMER READING store.
Other activities include book clubs, Science in the Summer, and many special events, such as magicians, theater groups, soap making, ice cream parties, and movies.
SUMMER READING programming at Bayard Taylor Library runs from mid-June through August.
